The AMX International AMX (also designated A-11 Ghibli or A-1) is a modern Italian-Brazilian light attack jet. The prototype first flew in 1984. Three years later, the aircraft entered service with the Brazilian Air Force, where it remains active today. In total, approximately 200 units of this aircraft were built. It is powered by a single Rolls-Royce Spey turbojet engine. The aircraft reaches a maximum speed of 950 km/h and has a maximum range of 3,300 kilometers. Its onboard armament consists of either a single 20mm M61A1 cannon or a 30mm Bernardini Mk.164 cannon.
The AMX machine was originally designed by the Aermacchi factory as a successor to the MB-340 and MB-326 aircraft. However, the Brazilian side joined during the development stage, establishing the AMX International consortium with the Italian partner. The resulting AMX aircraft can operate day and night under all weather conditions. It is also capable of operating from damaged runways using incomplete airport infrastructure. It features high overall structural durability. The aircraft is operated by the Italian Air Force under the designation AMX A-11 Ghibli, and in Brazil as the AMX A-1. There were three main variants of this aircraft: AMX-T (trainer version), AMX-ATA (advanced trainer version with limited combat capabilities), and AMX-R (reconnaissance version). Currently, Brazil and Italy are the primary operators of this aircraft type.
