Zvezda Kit - Soviet Fighter Lavochkin La-5 - 1:48 - 04803

Packaging Dimensions: 31 x 21 x 5 cm

The Lavochkin La-5 is a Soviet single-engine, low-wing, all-metal fighter aircraft from World War II. The La-5 was essentially a vastly improved version of the LaGG-3, which had been unable to compete with German fighters on the Eastern Front. The La-5 entered production in 1942 and remained in production until the end of the war. Approximately 10,500 units of all versions were built, with the La-5FN being the most widely produced variant. The design itself was very simple compared to German models; the aircraft could be assembled in virtually any factory—even non-aviation facilities—by minimally trained workers. The first aircraft of this type saw action during the winter of 1942–1943 and earned a combat reputation at the Battle of Stalingrad, where 180 La-5s were deployed, shooting down 353 German aircraft. The La-5 was powered by the Shvetsov M-82 and M-82FN piston engines, delivering 1,540 hp and 1,750 hp, respectively. The La-5 was succeeded by the La-7 aircraft. Externally, the two machines were virtually identical. The La-7 entered production in 1944, and by the end of the war, over 5,700 units had been built. Technical specifications (La-5FN version): length: 8.67 m, wingspan: 9.8 m, height: 2.54 m, maximum speed: 648 km/h, rate of climb: 16.7 m/s, maximum range: 765 km, service ceiling: 11,000 m; armament: fixed – two 20 mm ShVAK cannons; external – two 100 kg bombs or four RS-82 rockets.
