The WZ501 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is a Chinese copy of the Soviet/Russian BMP-1. China obtained several BMP-1 examples through Egypt in the late 1970s. The reverse engineering of the vehicle was successful in 1986, and small-scale production began in 1987. The WZ501 was originally developed for the export market, but it was later adopted by the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which urgently needed a dedicated IFV for its armored troops. The WZ501 entered service with the PLA in 1992 under the designation ZBD 86.
The ZBD 86A is the latest upgraded variant, equipped with a 30mm cannon turret and an HJ-73 anti-tank missile launcher.
